Diabetic Complications

The complications of diabetes mellitus are far less common and less severe in people who have well-controlled blood sugar levels. As diabetes is a metabolic disorder and chronic in most case, its complications can effectively be minimized through proper diet maintenance and by following proper medication routine. Health problems including smoking, elevated cholesterol levels, obesity, high blood pressure, and lack of regular exercise accelerate the deleterious effects of diabetes.
If not controlled, diabetes can put you at risk for a host of complications that can affect nearly every organ in the body. They include:

  • The heart and blood vessels
  • The eyes
  • The kidneys
  • The nerves
  • The gums and teeth

In addition, people with diabetes also have a higher risk of developing infections. These complications are broadly divided into microvascular (due to damage to small blood vessels) and macrovascular (due to damage to larger blood vessels).
